Hey there, fellow adventurers!
It’s been a while since I last shared my travel escapades, but trust me, I’ve been far from idle. Life has been a whirlwind of excitement, filled with bustling airports, exotic destinations, and one very enthusiastic little travel buddy. Yes, you guessed it – I’ve been on the move, soaking up the wonders of the world with my ever-energetic partner-in-crime, my 3-year-old son, Romeo that has just returned from his 11th country (my 63rd) 🌍👩👦
Now, let me be honest with you – traveling solo and traveling with a pint-sized explorer are two entirely different ballgames. Gone are the days of spontaneous adventures and carefree exploration. But fear not, my fellow parents, because I’m here to share the comical and enlightening tales of my experiences as a solo mom traveler with a toddler in tow. 🧳✈️
I must confess, my dear readers, that despite my absence from the blogosphere, I have not been slacking on the travel front. Oh no! The past couple of years have seen Romeo and me traversing continents, chasing sunsets, and inadvertently collecting an impressive list of countries we’ve visited together. It seems our adventures have caught the attention of fellow solo parents who are eager to embark on their own family escapades. And so, in the spirit of laughter, lightheartedness, and a touch of chaos, I’m diving back into the world of writing to share my recent misadventures, victories, and all the hilarious mishaps in between. 🤪🚀
Join me as I recount the tales of navigating airports with a toddler who seems to have a magnetic attraction to security checkpoints, attempting to find vegan meals in far-flung corners of the world, and the never-ending quest for child-friendly activities that don’t involve chasing pigeons in public squares. Together, we’ll explore the trials and triumphs of globetrotting with a preschooler, and maybe – just maybe – discover a few pearls of wisdom along the way. 🌟✨
So buckle up, fellow wanderers, as we embark on a journey filled with laughter, inspiration, and the delightful chaos that comes with exploring the world hand-in-hand with an unstoppable and intrepid 3-year-old explorer, It’s time to share the light-hearted, funny side of solo mom travel and inspire fellow parents to unleash their inner explorers alongside their little ones.
So, let’s talk about the Caribbean.
A couple of weeks ago, I have embarked on a whimsical escapade with Romeo, my fearless 3-year-old explorer, as we set foot in the mesmerizing paradise of Trinidad and Tobago. Our journey was filled with unforgettable moments, breathtaking beaches, and the sense of time standing still. While we encountered a few challenges along the way, our spirits remained high, and the memories we created will forever warm our hearts.🌍✈️
But first, why Trinidad and Tobago, you ask?
Well, hold on to your seats because this tale might not be the most thrilling, but it sure has its twists and turns.
Picture this: I found myself in a predicament where I needed to change my flights (loooong story, for another blog), and British Airways had the audacity to demand a destination. Can you believe it? So, there I was, scouring the Caribbean for a budget-friendly option, and lo and behold, Port of Spain waved at me with an air of affordability. Now, before you judge, let me clarify that my decision-making process wasn’t exactly a sophisticated one. I simply checked if there were any imminent natural disasters or a sudden influx of tsunamis. Once it seemed safe enough, I took a leap of faith and gave the green light to the BA customer service to switch my flights. Voila! Trinidad and Tobago became the chosen land of adventure. No hidden agenda, no grand master plan. Just a burning desire to explore somewhere new, bask in the warmth of the sun, and tick “Caribbean getaway” off my travel bucket list. Sometimes, my dear friends, the simplest reasons lead to the most extraordinary journeys.
Ah, the next phase: the infamous research stage. Let me tell you, it was a rollercoaster of indecision and countless changes. I wish I could say I had a trusty Trini friend or a secret local network to guide me, but alas, I was sailing these uncharted waters solo. And here’s where my first “mistake” made its grand entrance – I was determined to veer away from the touristy hotspots and dive headfirst into the lesser-known gems. Oh, the allure of being cool, of venturing off the beaten path! Little did I know that my audacious spirit might not have been the wisest choice in this particular scenario. Consider this a cautionary tale for all you fellow parents out there. Sometimes, my dear adventurers, embracing the road less traveled comes with its fair share of bumps, detours, and a lingering feeling of “Should I have just gone with the crowd?” But fear not, for amidst the occasional missteps, there were still moments of discovery and laughter that made the journey all the more memorable. So grab your metaphorical compass, and let’s navigate through the triumphs and “oops” moments together. After all, isn’t it the unexpected twists that make a travel story truly extraordinary?
So let’s unveil the chosen ones – the final destinations that graced our itinerary:
- Buccoo – 3 days / 2 nights
- Castara – 4 days / 3 nights
- Scarborough – 4 days / 3 nights
- Crown Point – 4 days / 3 nights
- Port of Spain – 4 days / 3 nights
But wait, there was more to this carefully curated travel extravaganza. You see, I had a grand plan – a desire to experience it all. From humble guest houses to luxurious Airbnbs, from quaint cottages to grandiose hotels, I wanted to savor every flavor of accommodation. Variety was the name of the game, dear readers, as I sought to unravel the different hues of hospitality and indulge in the full spectrum of lodging experiences.
Ah, the allure of the eclectic journey, where we joyfully hop from one enchanting haven to another, reveling in the diversity of cozy nooks and extravagant retreats. The secrets of each lodging await us, ready to be unraveled and cherished. After all, life is far too short to confine ourselves to a single type of accommodation. Let’s embrace the world, one booking at a time. At least that’s what I have always done.
However, my fellow adventurers, let me offer you a word of caution – a valuable lesson learned through the whirlwind of traveling with a spirited 3-year-old in a land where finding a taxi becomes an adventure of its own. In such circumstances, it might be wise to anchor ourselves to one or two carefully chosen places, especially if rest and tranquility are on the agenda. Trust me when I say this: packing and unpacking, checking in and checking out every other day can be quite the exhausting endeavor. So, here’s my humble advice: while you should undoubtedly explore and soak up as much as possible in Trinidad and Tobago, consider opting for day trips and tours instead of constantly uprooting your home base. Take a breather, savor the moments, and truly experience the essence of each place, rather than rushing from one temporary abode to the next. If fate ever leads me back to these captivating islands, I assure you, I shall heed my own advice and settle in for a longer stay at a select few locations. For in the end, it’s the deep connections we forge with a place that truly allow us to appreciate its magic.
So let’s check how it went:
- Chapter 1: Buccoo – A Tranquil Oasis (3 days / 2 Nights)
Buckle up as we embark on the first chapter of our incredible Trinidad and Tobago escapade. Picture this: after enduring a marathon-like flight from London to Port of Spain that left us tired, sweaty, parched, and ravenous, Romeo and I braved a short yet exhilarating 15-minute hop from Trinidad to Tobago. Despite our exhaustion, and some disappointing episodes at the airport which was perhaps the worst I have ever had trying to pass through immigration and customs; the sheer excitement pulsating through our veins kept us going. Ah, my little world traveler, Romeo, was positively bursting with anticipation!
And there we were, standing in the heart of Buccoo, just a mere 15 to 20-minute taxi ride, to be precise, from Tobago’s airport. As we arrived, Romeo’s eyes widened with wonder, reflecting the breathtaking scenery that unfolded before us. The pièce de résistance? Our accommodations were situated right in front of Buccoo Beach itself – a location that ensured we would be greeted by the soft caress of waves and the allure of sandy shores throughout our stay. And, oh, what a glorious spectacle awaited us on that first evening! The setting sun painted the sky with hues of gold and crimson, bidding farewell to our long day of travel in the most spectacular way possible.
The following day, our focus shifted to the mesmerizing beach where we spent all day long. Ah, my dear readers, allow me to share with you the infectious enthusiasm that radiated from Romeo’s every pore. With boundless energy, he sprinted across the sand, dove into the inviting waters, and set about building magnificent sandcastles fit for royalty, lol. Oh, the joy that danced in his eyes as he reveled in the simple pleasures of the golden shoreline. And to finish a perfect day, we finally had a wonderful meal at La Tartaruga, where we finally found vegan food as prior we were surviving on smoothies.
- Chapter 2: Castara – Where Paradise Meets Playfulness (4 days / 3 Nights)
After bidding Buccoo adieu, our journey led us to this coastal gem, just an hour’s ride away – that we were lucky that our lovely new host was also a taxi driver and everything in between and drove us there. Castara welcomed us with open arms, and Romeo wasted no time in diving into the sandy shores. We found solace at Castara Cottage by Hello Mello, a cozy and stunning haven that embraced us like old friends.
With snorkeling gear in tow, Romeo fearlessly explored the vibrant underwater world, his laughter harmonizing with the gentle rhythm of the waves.
We were lucky to be around for the beach fire parties even tho we were being eaten alive by the mosquitos (well I was, Romeo didn’t have that issue the entire time).
But heed my words, fellow travelers: Castara has its quirks. Finding vegan food proved to be an adventure in itself, and let’s not forget the uphill battle of getting around – literally. The town is perched atop a hill, and every trip to the beach and back home felt like conquering Mount Fuji all over again.
One fateful evening, the heavens opened up, and rain poured down upon us as if the world were about to end. Stranded, with no food, water, or a taxi in sight, we found ourselves at the mercy of the elements. It was a true test of our resilience, as the rainstorm hit us and left us longing for Noah’s ark.
But fear not, my dear readers, for even in the face of such adversity, Castara remained a town of beauty and charm. Despite the unexpected challenges, I wholeheartedly recommend visiting this lovely haven, for its allure and magic are simply irresistible.
- Chapter 3: Scarborough – Where the “Dolce Far Niente” Awaits (4 days / 3 Nights)
Then was time for Scarborough, the vibrant capital of Tobago! With growling stomachs and a longing for civilization, Romeo and I sought refuge at the Half Moon Blue Hotel. Oh, what a gem it was! This exquisite hotel not only offered a luxurious king bed for our weary souls but also housed the most incredible restaurant in all of Scarborough.
As our taste buds danced with joy, Romeo’s infectious energy spilled over into the pool area. He swiftly made new friends and transformed into a little water sprite, splashing and swimming to his heart’s content. Our days were a delightful medley of soaking up the sun by the stunning pool, stealing breathtaking glimpses of the ocean, and indulging in mouthwatering meals that satisfied our rumbling bellies.
- Chapter 4: Crown Point – A Beach Lover’s Paradise (4 days / 3 Nights)
Oh, Crown Point, you stole our hearts and became the highlight of our unforgettable journey! This vibrant and bustling touristic haven beckoned us with its irresistible charm, and we couldn’t help but fall head over heels. Trust me, if I had known what I know now, I would have extended our stay here without hesitation.
One of the greatest joys was the ease of finding taxis, a pleasant departure from our previous adventures. It was a relief to have a reliable mode of transportation at our fingertips, allowing us to explore every nook and cranny of this enchanting paradise. And let’s not forget the diverse culinary delights that awaited us at every corner. From mouthwatering street food to exquisite local restaurants, our taste buds were in for a treat.
But let me tell you, the crown jewel of Crown Point was the unforgettable tour we embarked upon. Imagine this: crystal-clear waters, a boat ride that filled our hearts with excitement, and the promise of snorkeling and exploring hidden gems. Our journey took us to the famous Nylon Pools, a mesmerizing natural wonder that seemed like it was plucked straight out of a dream. Romeo’s eyes sparkled with wonder as he witnessed the underwater world come alive through his snorkeling adventures.
And then there was Non Man Land, a slice of paradise that left us in awe of Mother Nature’s artistry. We soaked up the sun, savored the serenity, and let the soft sand embrace our toes. Oh, and JFYI, you can find boats/tours departing from Store Bay Beach – 3h duration / $100 TT and children go free – but be aware that if you want to snorkel, you need your own equipment.
But the true highlight, my friends, was the renowned Pigeon Point beach. Its powdery white sands and breathtaking vistas made it one of the most exquisite beaches we have ever laid our eyes upon. I wish I would have visited this stunning paradise a few more times, but sadly we visited on our last day before departing for Trinidad. A quick mention that the entrance fee is $20 TT and a beach chair only costs $30 TT for the entire day – surprisingly the cheapest price on the island.
Crown Point, with its irresistible beaches, warm sunsets, and delightful adventures, captured our hearts in an instant. Our cozy haven at Dexter Place (Airbnb) which I highly recommend – and for those asking check it here: Dexter Place in Crown Point, provided the perfect backdrop for Romeo’s beach escapades, as he collected seashells and built sandcastles. We really recommend our Airbnb place and not only was the perfect location but the hosts were incredibly helpful. (Extra thanks for the car ride to the airport Dexter and hope to see you and your lovely wife in Europe).
- Chapter 5: Port of Spain – Urban Adventures and Farewell (4 days / 3 Nights)
After bidding farewell to the tranquil shores of Tobago, we ventured into the vibrant streets of Port of Spain, the beating heart of Trinidad. It was a stark contrast to the laid-back atmosphere we had grown accustomed to, but oh boy, did we love experiencing the dynamic energy that pulsed through the city’s veins.
Trinidad, the bustling sister of Tobago, welcomed us with open arms and a flurry of activity. The streets buzzed with life as we dove headfirst into the bustling rhythm of urban living. While the chaos and fast-paced nature of the city were a departure from our previous island escapades, we relished the chance to embrace the vibrant energy that surrounded us.
Exploring Port of Spain meant immersing ourselves in its rich history and diverse culture. We strolled through the captivating streets, marveling at the architectural wonders that stood as testaments to the city’s past. Romeo’s eyes lit up with excitement as we discovered hidden gems, uncovering the stories that lay within each historical landmark.
Finding transportation was a breeze compared to our previous exploits. Our brand new and flashy Airbnb, a gem of a find, provided us with a comfortable and well-located sanctuary amidst the urban jungle. It was the perfect respite after a day of exploration, allowing us to recharge for the next day’s adventures. For those asking, this is the Airbnb I stayed at and highly recommend: Port of Spain AirBnb
One of our favorite spots in Port of Spain was the beloved Savannah Park. Here, we reveled in the green expanse, where nature and urban life merged seamlessly. The vibrant atmosphere, adorned with locals engaging in leisurely activities, created a sense of community and camaraderie that warmed our hearts.
Reflections and Gratitude:
Reflecting upon our time in Trinidad and Tobago, I couldn’t be prouder of Romeo, my little world traveler. With each new country we visit, he blossoms into a compassionate and open-minded individual, embracing the diversity and beauty that our world has to offer. His adaptability and curiosity inspire me, reminding me of the boundless potential that lies within each of us.
What impresses me the most about Romeo is how well-behaved he is during our travels. Despite being only three years old, he’s patient, curious, and respectful of the customs and traditions of the places we visit. Whether it’s observing the local customs or engaging in conversations with the friendly locals, Romeo approaches each interaction with genuine curiosity and an open heart. I believe these experiences will shape him into a compassionate global citizen who appreciates and respects diverse cultures. 🌍❤️
I’m truly grateful for these precious moments spent with my little world voyager. Not only are we making cherished memories together, but I’m also witnessing firsthand his growth and development. Seeing Romeo embrace new environments, make friends wherever he goes, and fearlessly explore the world around him fills my heart with immense joy and pride. 🌍🤗
Trinidad and Tobago had captured our hearts, and we left knowing that the memories we created would forever inspire us to embark on new adventures, hand in hand, wherever our wanderlust takes us next.
Couple of small tips for your Trinidad and Tobago Adventure but that will make a difference:
- Buy a local sim card (at the airport): To stay connected while in Tobago, it’s recommended to purchase a sim card upon arrival. Finding one on in Tobago can be challenging, so it’s best to be prepared.
- Secure a reliable taxi driver: If you come across a trustworthy taxi driver during your journey, be sure to exchange contact information. Having a reliable driver can make getting around much easier unless you want to rent a car which I found extremely expensive.
- Be prepared for the rainy season: Trinidad and Tobago’s rainy season can bring sudden downpours. Pack rain gear.
- If you are vegan or have any food allergies, make sure you travel with loads of snacks because isn’t as easy to find supermarkets unless you are in a tourist area.
- An important tip to avoid getting feasted on by mosquitoes is to make sure you have some bug spray on hand. Trust me, you don’t want to become their all-you-can-eat buffet!
Stay tuned for more tales from the road – and trust me, there are plenty to come! 🌈🌍
Love & Light
