Do you know that moment when it all clicks and you just know you will make it – as in you will achieve your dreams?
Well, because I really remember when that moment happened to me.
It all started during the Summer of 1996. “Someone” came into my life and completely revamped it by giving me so much confidence and be so inspirational that things have never been the same again. If you know me personally, you know who I am talking about 😉
I was born in the 80s and grow in the 90s – typical generation Y kid. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that I was highly influenced by the Spice Girls while growing up.
It shocks me to think that is now the 20th anniversary since 5 ladies I didn’t even know, completely transformed my life. They were such a huge inspiration, not just the music but the philosophy, the positivity and obviously, the attitude.
Analysing their impact in my life, I have realized they played a huge part on my quest of following my dreams and be truthful to myself and I am so grateful they were my role models back in the day – specially when we have a generation that idolizes Kardashians and where MTV has replaced their music videos by garbage reality TV shows.
As much as I loved the 5 Spice Girls as a whole since day 1 there was always one that completely stands out to me. Somehow I could identify with her, her drive and her loud personality: Geri Halliwell aka Ginger Spice.
Perhaps, was the fact I was the “oldest sister” which I confess that made me a bit more bossy and outspoken, but I have always seen her as the motor and the brain behind the Spice Girls. After all, who choose the name and came up with the unforgettable Girl Power slogan? Exactly.
Now, before starting to judge me or Miss Halliwell (now Mrs. Horner), there are a few very interesting things I have to tell you, in case you don’t know much about her and then feel free to see if the influence was positive or not.
When she was only a child, Geri made a very important decision. She decided she would be extremely famous. While most kids want the same, while growing up they usually gave up and decide they want to be hairdressers or teachers instead.
But not Geri Halliwell!
For a number of reasons, as a teenager, she actually became obsessed with the idea of becoming famous. So she tried everything. She wouldn’t give up. She listened to a lot of NOs through the process but she confessed that for every NO she would listen, she would become stronger and her desire became bigger. NOs would empower her and give her extra strength.
Becoming a TV host and a glamour model were not enough for her.
So in 1994, Geri and another four girls got together, and the rest is history.
Geri Halliwell AKA Ginger Spice, became indeed one of the most if not the most famous and influential woman in the 90s.
How?
Well, she wasn’t the most intellectual or intelligent person around. She was not necessarily a stunning woman. She was not even that talented, as she couldn’t really sing or dance (shocking). And she didn’t have super wealthy parents, in fact, she had very humble beginnings.
But never has a pop start achieved so much from so little. She has made herself one of the most recognizable women in the world through sheer force of will.
Ginger became that famous because she had faith, she believed in herself and she worked really really hard to achieve her goal.
My goal was never to become famous, but I so can relate, because independent of how ambitious my goals were/are, it was the drive and attitude that Geri and the other girls inspired me with that turn me into a believer! From being a singer, to move to London, becoming a successful businesswoman to have a mini-retirement, and travel the world by myself for 3 years, I was definitely inspired by Geri and the girls success story.
Can you see the power of Faith? Of Believing in yourself and in your dreams? It is the law of auto-suggestion!!!
Funnily enough, I end up moving to London and somehow, got to know Geri on another level, in a more personal way through the years. She is in fact absolutely adorable and has been always very gracious and lovely towards me.
As I have returned to Europe from my 3 years journey, I have managed to see some of my favourite people so far, and Geri was not an exception.
So was really special to be with her and she told me something that really touched me.
Come and find out in this note we made for you =)
So never forget, follow your dreams and Girl Power <3
With love, Emma (and Geri)
p.s If you would like to know more about Geri and her exciting life journey, she has a couple of autobiographies where she explains in detail her journey to fame and success – I recommend “If Only”, an interesting and inspirational read.
